"Literally everything about this is illegal."

"Can we take a second to inventory this day?" I could hear her rushing to keep up with me, quick footsteps and breath that tried to match her pace.

"No, Kira; I don't exactly have time to look back." It had been a long day, even for me, and I didn't exactly have the patience for her nagging. I still had a long day ahead of me.

I didn't expect her to grab hold of my shirt, or to be strong enough to cause a stumble in my step.

"Hey! I think you owe me a bit of an explanation. Literally everything about this is illegal, so I would like to have a bit of an understanding before I continue to follow you off this cliff." She wore anger well, her dark eyes twinkling as they narrowed. I could have mistaken her red hair for rage-induced fire.

I wore silence in the thin line of my mouth, and she loosened.

"This isn't exactly fair to me. I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be kidnapped by a bodyguard in training. You didn't seem to want my opinion when you threw me into a stolen police car, and you sure as hell didn't include me in the decision-making process before you killed everyone in that building back there."

I chuckled. "The building blew up; we can't say for sure everyone in there died." Rolling my eyes, I kept walking toward the docks. The sky was glowing, but the water was pitch black. I could only imagine how the cold would sting if I fell in.

Or if she fell in, because the girl was still following me.

"Listen," I hissed, stopping short and turning abruptly. She almost ran into me, making a mousy noise as she caught herself.

"You weren't supposed to be here. You weren't even supposed to be in this damn country, so I suggest you find a way to leave immediately. Things are about to get very messy, and the last thing I need is for your royal screams to be echoing in my ears while this island turns into a dystopia. Understood?" My jaw was clenched so tightly that my teeth were beginning to hurt.

She nodded, but as soon as I started for the boat I could hear her footsteps rushing behind me again.

It was going to be a long night.
